Biting Through Biting Through (The Clinging)

The death penalty in nature is when the storm in Mongolia continues long enough for the animals to die of cold and starvation. A Cooper’s hawk dives from above and takes a dove on the wing. The neighbor’s cat catches a rat; I find the body with no head. A gunman walks into a post office and starts shooting. A pack of dogs attacks the gunman and rips him limb from limb. Blood pools over the linoleum floor, washes down the drain. Ashes scatter in the wind, settle on stones, wash down to the river.
