The Great and Wise Jakalunus — Modoc

Jakalunus was a great and wise doctor long before the whites arrived. Once he sent out his spirits to a party of Warm Springs warriors who had killed a few Modoc men. The spirits inflicted deaths with no observable cause. You didn’t have to tell Jakalunus anything, for in his house he had medallions, eagle and red-headed woodpecker feathers, and stuffed jack rabbits that would dance when anything happened. Once a family buried an old woman because they didn’t want to care for her. His spirits told Jakalunus so he went out to dig her up. While he was busy digging her up, Klamath warriors filled him full of arrows, but he killed many of them one at a time with a snap of his fingers.
