About this book

I could have placed any of my subjects in different chapters. Cultural memories exist in traditions; symbolic powers exist in cultural memories, etcetera. One may argue the uses of art are more various than are works themselves. Whereas each work is a unique accomplishment, it may be understood differently, and individuals may use it for different purposes.

I drew the cover illustration in pen and pencil from a nineteenth century Kawakwaka'wakw mask of the Crooked Beak of Heaven, from a photograph by Pierre Selim.
