Ordu, Turkey

Omer was tired of hazelnuts and felt his people shouldn’t depend entirely on a single crop, so he started a small pig farm and fattened them with hazelnuts. He rented orchards so his hogs could eat the fruit and nuts fallen early from the trees. Instead of selling them to butchers, he hired butchers and cured the hams and bellies. Soon he was able to offer more for his neighbors’ hazelnuts than they could get in town.
