Like ourselves

We are creatures of the same planet, made of cells using instructions in deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA, so you’d think there’d be an affinity. After that are many divisions and subdivisions to separate other creatures from humans, and your kind from mine. Do we require matching features, or can we gaze into eyes, understand there’s a mind inside, and recognize common feelings? Differences are threatening if one isn’t confident in one’s own identity. Acceptance is difficult if one’s overly proud of one’s own species. Religions and moral codes call for respect for one’s own kind, and some say all life is sacred, but do we respect bugs? Do we worship crabs? Bats, snakes, mosquitos? Are eels that eat dead things on the sea bottom sacred?
