National symbol

Ben Franklin thought the bald eagle was poor symbol for our country. He saw it as “a bird of bad moral character” that “does not get his living honestly” because it steals food from the fishing hawk and is “too lazy to fish for himself.” Nevertheless, many admire the eagle as a symbol of strength and freedom. This may not be related to the fact that the bird is an opportunistic carnivore.
