- we’re walking toward the host, our bridegroom.
- young girls in solemn white dresses with veils.
- and the young boys?
- are they walking toward their groom, too?
- are we all walking toward a convivial host,
- up a long, straight aisle,
- to a man who will let us swallow him whole?
- take him in his round, wafer form,
- as large as anything we can imagine.
- is God this good? we ask ourselves.
- can marriage to God be this easy?
- a grave walk up an aisle,
- an outstretched tongue,
- a delicate touch of bread,
- a slight loss of saliva.
- I suppose we are too young to know
- how perfectly horrible love can be:
- how consuming,
- how mortifying,
- how necessary.
