- cosmic dog is out for a walk in space.
- he uses some sense,
- unknown to man,
- to select a bush—
- a delicate ritual of discernment,
- as fitting a deliberation
- as befits any father of creation.
- steady on three legs
- he lifts his fourth
- and a steady stream of hot stars spurt into the galaxy,
- steaming into cold, absent air.
- a few star traces wet his paws and,
- in his walking wake,
- he leaves prints of glowing amber.
- next he saunters to a moon.
- there he squats and looks absurdly solemn
- while he makes his deposit.
- he has no doubts about its wrap-worthy worth.
- do not trifle with cosmic dog.
- his veteran’s coat is leathered with scars,
- his serrated ears rasp in the wind.
- even in dog years he is old.
- his numbered days are set out
- like the teeth he uses to nip his rump,
- and rid himself of fleas even he must endure,
- God that he is.
