Caṇḍa Ānanda said, “Suppose none of your neighbors believe what you believe. They might worship snakes. They might worship idols made of wax. Their gods might lead them to harm their children. There’s a lot of bad stuff out there. The question is whether there’s any way to get through to them. You need to remind yourself that they, like all of us, are weak. You should talk to them like a loving brother or sister. They might very well think you’re a monster and want to convert you. Righteous anger is what gives religion a bad name.”
