In his lifetime, Caṇḍa Ānanda was regarded as a mystic. When he heard someone say this, Caṇḍa Ānanda scoffed and said, “I’m no more a mystic than a frog sitting on a lily. If you poke me with a stick, I’ll jump into the pond.” Caṇḍa Ānanda said, “The difference between me and a mystic is I don’t want to confuse you.” Caṇḍa Ānanda also asked, “Didn’t Krishna tend cows?”
