Only one old retainer could call Max “Bob.” Mitty was a groundskeeper who had known Max since he was a baby. Everyone else addressed Max as “Your Lordship.” If protocol slipped, Max would say, “You may address me as ‘Your Imperial Majesty.’” Then he would wink.
