Max had always been home schooled. This wasn’t his decision. Later, he realized that he had missed out on play-yard bullying, cliques and social shaming, fraternity hazing rituals, and all-night cramming sessions, but he had had the best tutors for all the subjects—languages, physical and social sciences, mathematics, art, architecture, literature, philosophy, and theology. Naturally, he was excited when the first summer sessions at the Ladislaus estate were about to begin, and not only did the curriculum feature classes in paleontology, but it was in-person— Max would be challenged in the company of other intelligent and passionate students. Max was also nervous. He didn’t really know if anyone would talk with him. After all, for most of the students, he was older than their fathers.
