Jefferson Smith was appointed to replace a Senator who died because he was naïve enough they thought he’d be easy to manipulate. The trouble was he was also idealistic.
For the censor at the Hays Office, it was a question whether the film was disrespectful of the institution of the Senate or whether it honored the institution because, in the film, honesty and the will of the people prevail over wealth and corruption.
