In Latin, the name means “purification.” Purification ceremonies prepared people and buildings for the spring— a good time to honor your ancestors. February was originally sometimes followed and also cut short by Mercedonius to get the months to line up with the years. It stayed a mess, or not all that important, until the Julian calendar introduced leap year.
