Everyone else has left for a picnic by the river, but our lady has slept in. It’s springtime. An open window brings in the scent of flowers. She washes her face. The painter catches her as she stands and faces the window. Swallows dance and orioles cry; she yawns. The painter would like to depict deeper thoughts but she doesn’t turn to show her face. On his donkey, as he rode down to the river, Du Fu didn’t see her at all. He was distracted by pageantry and color, but I can’t stop thinking about this lone woman. Back home, happy to see my wife, I wonder why the lady in the painting was alone.

李仲谋家有周昉画背面欠伸内人，极精，戏作此诗。 深宫无人春日长，沉香亭北百花香。 美人睡起薄梳洗，燕舞莺啼空断肠。 画工欲画无穷意，前立东风初破睡。 若教回首却嫣然，阳城下蔡俱风靡。 杜陵饥客眼长寒，蹇驴破帽随金鞍。 隔花临水时一见，只许腰肢背后看。 心醉归来茅屋底，方信人间有西子。 君不见孟光举案与眉齐，何曾背面伤春啼。
