Since Pig Latin has been understood by children since Shakespearean times, parents in Germany have increasingly found that they can understand each other but that children under the age of 18 cannot if they simply speak backwards. Instead of asking, “Möchtest du ins Bett gehen?” they ask, “Neheg tteb sni du tsethcöm?” They’ve become so adept at backwards speech that they use it when they travel as tourists. They can privately criticize or complain about their accommodations and annoy their guides or hosts.
