Burp of the scorned woman

A summer retreat in rural Pennsylvania is the site of many reports of the so-called burp of the scorned woman. The story is that a Mrs. Beach, on vacation at this retreat in the summer of 1903, was the subject of an intervention led by her husband, Mr. Sam Beach. The purpose of the intervention was to urge Mrs. Beach to see a doctor because she had horribly bad breath. Sam thought she had something curable but she wouldn’t see a doctor. When Sam and three others at the resort confronted her, the three so-called friends told her they couldn’t stand to have anything to do with her unless she went for a cure. This shocked Mrs. Beach, who collapsed into a coma that she never recovered from. At any rate, increasingly in subsequent years, vacationers using the resort’s public toilets, while minding their business, have been interrupted by a burping sound followed by a foul stench.
