Dipartimento Segnaletica Ingannevole di Roma

Just outside of the Vatican City a small department of signage works assiduously to replicate ancient plaques in bronze, marble, and granite that have gradually replaced modern signs that used to direct millions of foreign tourists annually to hotels, restaurants, and monuments. This department also perpetuates an ancient feud with officials at the Poste Dipartimento who, during the current century, have tried to assign street numbers that are consecutive instead of random.
