Legally dead

Every day in developed countries thousands of wives and husbands are declared legally dead, usually because the surviving spouse wants to remarry, and it’s cheaper and faster than divorce; however, in some states in India many people declare themselves as being dead or ask their spouses to do it to avoid income taxes and personal debts. This is in addition to criminals who are on the run from the law who find it more convenient to be dead than to keep running.
