The natural world isn’t wild. It’s formed and sculpted by humans and human agencies over the millenniums. The bush is as tame as bushmen; rivers have always been highways, jungles are like farms and cities. In China, rice paddies and tea plantations cover the mountainsides. There isn’t a square meter of soil that hasn’t been turned over. There isn’t a rock face that hasn’t been quarried. It’s unclear whether our dreams shaped our landscapes or the landscapes shape our dreams.
