Stupidity is a big hit in America this season. The public can’t relate to Mr. Smart; he’s too pessimistic, too pushy, stuck up. His message doesn’t read in sound bites. But Mr. Stupid, bumbling his speeches, letting other people make his decisions, is the all-American kid next door whose success we can admire without envy. He always manages to blurt out something stupid so we think he’s being sincere. Some say Mr. Stupid is only hiding his brilliance; others say Mr. Smart doesn’t fool anyone with his fake stupidity. Even if Mr. Stupid is insincere, he’s stealing the show, while Mr. Smart’s wife is behind the curtains trying to rewrite the next act.
