- like today,
- I saw an ample woman
- at the corner of James Merrill and Thomas Lynch.
- “that woman has a pigeon on a string,”
- was my first thought.
- there was a woman with a thrust-out breast,
- then there was a pigeon.
- the pigeon was a few steps in front of the woman,
- and they were walking to the same jaunty beat,
- were different shades of the same gray.
- so to string along is just the natural inclination of the imagination.
- because there are many days like today
- when what’s absurd is probable.
