Once a year, on night before the winter solstice, God, Allah, Yahweh (going by these and many other names) has a conference with every mythological creature, to review their performance during the year. Whether a creature’s purpose is harmless, harmful to humans, or merely mischievous, it has a role to play in God’s creation, and so it needs to submit to its annual review. Some of these creatures dislike each other, so these have an appointed hour when they must appear and listen, behave themselves, or risk termination. Creatures don’t have easy jobs, so mistakes invariably happen. They go over all the rules, and decide together how to do better. Oni, ogres, leprechauns, gnomes, and goblins. Fairies, mermaids, unicorns, and werewolves. Monsters of the seas, caves, and forests. They all need to try a little harder.
