Disappearing tramp

Around 1812 in the county of Robertson, Kentucky, local reports from Mount Olivet, Bratton, and elsewhere describe a vagrant who, appearing to be drunk, was frequently taken into custody, locked in a jail cell, but who was never there in the morning. He was unshaven but never smelled foul, and he is said to have worn a straw hat that would always be found in the cell on a pillow.
