Entrapments

From its beginning a baby is swaddled for its own good and to make it easier for its parents. In different ways we continue to be swaddled. We like to think we’re a free people in a free country, but maybe we are what we hate. If we hate to be inconvenienced, we may be inconveniencing others. If we hate being told what to do, we may be telling others not to tell us what to do. Our sexuality and other instincts bind us more securely when we refuse to accept them. When the body is trapped, the mind may soar, but when the mind’s trapped there’s no freedom at all.
